Out of this world posters…
I am fairly interested in outer space, other planets, and such… Not a huge fan, but interested nonetheless. However, if my textbooks or wall hangings in school were designed like this, perhaps my passion/interest would have developed more. From The Moment…
Now that water has been found on the moon, it seems even more fitting that 2009 has officially been designated the International Year of Astronomy (who knew?). But let’s be honest: space’s heyday was the summer of ’69, when Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong brought a rugged, clean-cut appeal to the final frontier. It was perhaps with this in mind that Simon Page, a self-taught graphic designer, created a series of posters for the Year of Astronomy that are modeled on textbook covers of the ’60s and ’70s. The result is a beautiful exercise in conceptual minimalism, with a clear geometric bent that betrays Page’s math-nerd origins. (He has a degree in applied mathematics and took up graphic design as a hobby two years ago.) It’s hard to choose which to like best, but I’m particularly fond of the deep blue poster, below, in which Page uses diagonal lines to create interstellar objects in relief — and calls to mind the gentle descent of a meteor shower.
Page originally created the posters as both an exercise and a marketing tool, but when the organizers of IYA09 found out about them, they asked his permission to use the posters to promote the initiative. Thanks to the attention they’ve received, Page is now producing prints of the posters to order. They’re available on his Web site, in two sizes, for about $40 and $60.

Muji X Lego
The Muji and Lego collaboration has finally been realized. The companies have designed a collection of punch out shapes and figures to be combined with existing Lego sets. Not sure who the target for this product is, but I imagine the squirell pictured below would look nice on my computer screen…

Kandinsky at NYC Guggenheim
The work of Moscow-born Wasily Kandinsky is on display at the Guggenheim in New York. This is the first full scale retrospective of the artist´s work in the US and a great opportunity to see the artist that inspired many after him in both the art and design worlds.
“Kandinsky draws from the three largest public holdings of the artist’s work—that of the Guggenheim Museum; the Centre Pompidou, Paris; and the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich—as well as renowned institutions and private collections to bring together nearly one hundred paintings dating from 1902 to 1942. Complemented by more than sixty works on paper from the collections of the Guggenheim and the Hilla von Rebay Foundation, this retrospective retraces the painter’s oeuvre, focusing on key events that informed his life and work. Marked by two world wars and the 1917 Russian Revolution, Kandinsky’s abstraction did not develop in unworldly detachment; rather, this exhibition, the first full-scale retrospective of his career in the United States since 1985, reveals the complex background to his artistic advancement.”
A visit to the Guggenheim is the perfect compliment to a stay at the Crosby Street Hotel!

Verner Panton, by Tomorrowland Collection
The legacy of legendary Danish designer Verner Panton has been re-visited by the Tomorrowland Collection in their latest range of rugs and scarves. Panton is equally well known for his color theory and swinging designs, as well as for his industrial design with lamps and furniture. Here we see the colors applied in a way that would fit well into any Panton-era environment.

Porter X Steiff
After a successful collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld and Loopwheeler, Steiff teddy bear company has joined forces with Japanese bag company Porter on a new bear. Hypebeast has the details, “Porter’s parent company Yoshida Kaban celebrates its 75th anniversary next year as its most iconic example of the Tanker forms the inspiration for this teddy bear. The bear itself is modeled closely to Steiff’s original 1908 style as it comes in a rarely seen black version comprised of Mohair. In the last year or so we’ve seen artist and brand collaborations involving Japanese fleece brand Loopwheeler and high-profile Chanel designer, Karl Lagerfeld. The reference to the Tanker series can be seen in the pads of the feet and hands withn its distinct orange hue. True to each Steiff release, the bear features a studded ear. Each instance of the run of 750 bears will include a serial numbered document of authenticity. The Porter Tanker x Steiff Teddy Bear will carry a suggested retail price of ¥44,940 JPY (approximately $501 USD) with a release slated for spring of 2010.”
