Elliott Erwitt in Puerto Rico
The Moment blog shared a very interesting story about one of my all time favorite photographers, Elliott Erwitt…
“Fifty years ago, when the 26-year-old photographer Elliott Erwitt shot an advertising campaign for Puerto Rico, the island still held a sense of the exotic for American travelers. Nowadays, Old San Juan has a Marshall’s discount store on one of its main plazas, and the island struggles to differentiate itself from other spots in the Caribbean — that is, as a place to hole up in a pool-side cabana between trips to the beach and the breakfast buffet. Which is why Puerto Rico tourism officials have commissioned Erwitt to reprise his 1950s shoot with a new portfolio of images intended to recapture some of the island’s cultural allure (you can read about the campaign in Stuart Elliott’s advertising column). It’s yet more evidence — in addition to the recently revived grand-dame hotels and retro cocktails and velvety old-world passenger trains — that nostalgia is a powerful force in the travel world just now. Here’s a look at Erwitt’s photographs, then and now, the difference at times being poignantly hard to discern.”

United Nations Dream Ball
This is an amazing toy/resource for the developing world…
“To the children in The Third World; Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, Congo and etc, who can’t enjoy football freely because of poverty, war and natural disaster, having a football means a lot and can be a dream and hope to escape from their poor life.
However, the children are so poor that they can not buy a football. So, they play football with the ball made of plastic bag or coconut palm leaves, therefore giving them their own footballs which can give them hope. This is our aim for this project.
We suggest this Dream Ball made of relief boxes delivered to those poor children by recycling.
A. Create patterns that can help making a ball on the surface of an aid box.
B. Activities of giving aid boxes to children in The Third World.
C. The used aid boxes will be recycled as a football by children with the patterns on boxes.
D. By making Dream Ball with the children together, the aid organizations will get the chance to be friendly with them.” (via Lovely Package)

“If children take off the paper from an aid box by following the patterns on it, and assemble those parts with the attached instruction, they can get a football. We can apply those patterns on any type of boxes - a square type, a cylinder type. Now,when children get a cyliner type aid box filled with supplies, they can move it by rolling that box.”

“In the aspect of material, we considered children playing football with bare foot. So,we use paper that can be recycled and its thickness changes the intensity and elasticity of the Dream Ball.”

Day of Mourning for Foodies…
Food lovers around the world will be hanging their heads low… Ferrán Adria, the 3 star michelin chef has annouced that he will be closing his restaurant El Bulli (arguably the best restaurant in the world) in 2012 for two years…
The chef says that his schedule of 15 hours days is wearing him out and he needs time with his family. He made the announcement to a shocked crowd at Madrid Fusion, an international culinary conference. He said that while no meals would be served at El Bulli for the two years he would still be working on other things and continuing his ongoing mission to innovate the world of food. He plans to return to serving food at 2014 but made no promises to reopen El Bulli in the same format it exists in now.
When the three Michelin star restaurant closes it will leave a big gap at the top. The restaurant and its chef are famous for transforming the world of food. His unique version of molecular gastronomy has changed the culinary landscape. Who will claim the title of world’s best chef? There are a few contenders around the globe including Heston Blumethal, Thomas Keller and Grant Achatz. (via Luxist)

The Selby takes on Tatsuhiko “Ryu” Asahi
Ryu, of Medicom fame (the company that produces all of these cool vinyl toys like the Bearbrick ones…) recently let himself and his office be photographed by voyeur-extraordinaire photographer, Todd Selby. The resulting images are pretty much what one would expect from a toy company…
