Nowness by LVMH
Nowness.com, a digital magazine created by LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, wants to teach you how to live a life of luxury. Relax. The site, at least, is free.
In a time when luxury sales are not exactly on the up and up, Nowness stands as a way for brands to connect with consumers–past, present, and future (they hope). The site, which has been running in teaser mode and will go into full launch today, serves as LVMH’s answer to last year’s closure of online store eLuxury.com, which was shut down largely because many luxury brands started offering e-commerce through their own sites. Rather than create another online shopping destination, LVMH has positioned Nowness as an “information reference”–a place for users to experience “moments of inspiration” and “experience the luxury lifestyle online.”
Nowness will feature original and exclusive content. Each day will feature a new theme (the launch-day theme appears to be “hair”) complete with a handful of stories–videos, photos, or pieces of art revolving around fashion, art, or travel. Today, for example, features a video of model Lily Donaldson, with hair by stylist Sam McKnight, titled “Lily Donaldson’s Flying Hair.” A preview of the site featured a short film noir featuring model Agyness Deyn (below). A slideshow of fashion photography featuring highly stylized hair accompanies.

A look into the future of fashion
Many of the designs at New York City’s recent Fashion Week certainly looked futuristic–think metallics and extreme eyeliner–but the fashion industry will have to do better than that if it wants to adapt to coming changes brought about by climate change, resource shortages, and population increase. As these factors emerge in the decades ahead, what will happen to the multi-trillion dollar fashion industry? The Forum for the Future explored the question in the Fashion Futures report (PDF), which envisions four sustainable scenarios for the fashion industry in 2025.
*In Techno-Chic the latest craze is ‘Chameleon’ clothing, a military spin-off, offering a blank canvas which can change colour and style, programmed to mimic the celeb of the moment. People ‘try on’ clothes in virtual mirrors using 3-D body scanners.
*In the Patchwork Planet scenario, clothes are grown from bacterial cellulose and waterless washing machines are common in areas experiencing water shortages.
*In Slow is Beautiful ’slow fashion’ is in vogue, and high street brands compete on sustainability credentials. People also wear ’smart’ clothes that monitor their health and wellbeing.
*In Community Couture the fashion industry is highly entrepreneurial and focused around keeping costs down and reusing clothing.

Hiroshi Fujiwara in Dub Conference
As a big fan of the Japanese streetwear movement led by figures including Hiroshi Fujiwara, Daiko Suzuki (Woolrich Woolen Mills) , and Hiroki Naramura (Visvim) I was thrilled to see the re-release of Fujiwara´s early forray into music…
“First released back in 1995, Hiroshi Fujiwara’s ‘HIROSHI FUJIWARA in DUB CONFERENCE’ sees a re-release today over at the Japanese iTunes Store. The EP is composed of classical and relaxing tunes, a reflection of Hiroshi’s lifestyle and taste. ”

Mountain Man, Stefan Kruckenhauser
The Moment blog profiled the work of Stefan Fruckenhauser, the author and photographer behind some of the most compelling and inspiring “mountain” books ever…
” “Snow Canvas With the Leica” may not be the most exciting of book titles, but the author Stefan Kruckenhauser knew how to capture the drama and beauty of skiing in the Austrian Alps in the 1930s. He was known as the “pope of skiing,” and he trained many instructors on the finer points of the sport. While you might not understand or care for all the terminology, the images he took are glorious — something right out of an Arnold Franck mountain film. “Skikamerad Toni/Winterfahrten in Garmisch-Partenkirchen” by Dr. Paul Wolf is another bland title (loose translation: My Ski Comrade Tony/Winter Sports in Garmisch-Partenkirchen) but offers gorgeous moments of the sport as well as the après-ski scene in Austrian’s fanciest resorts.
You can find both at High Valley Books in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Go to highvalleybooks.com.”

Vitra Museum by Herzog and deMeuron
“The Vitra campus in Weil am Rhein, Germany, is already a mecca for contemporary architecture, featuring a design museum by Frank Gehry, a conference center by Tadao Ando, and another building on the way by SANAA. And they’ve just finished what might be the greatest of them of them all: a new building, designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, to showcase the company’s home-furniture collection.
Herzog & de Meuron–who made a global splash in 2008 with their “Bird’s Nest” stadium for the Beijing Olympics–conceived of the building as an “ur-house.” The individual volumes take the form of generic, A-frame houses, which are then stacked on top of each–creating an architectural symbol of Vitra’s actual business, selling high-design through mass production.” (via Fast Company)

Swingers and Art, What could be better?
Art lovers who are keen to visit one of the most important pieces of Gustav Klimt in Vienna will have to endure a new test of dedication… Currently, The Secession — a world-renowned venue for contemporary art in downtown Vienna, has temporarily incorporated a sex club named “Element6″ as part of a project by Swiss artist Christoph Buechel.
Visitors who would like to see the Beethover Freize from Klimt will be required to walk through Element6 in order to visit the painting, although not during operating hours. “The room where the frieze is exhibited is locked at night for security reasons. But it too has its share of mattresses, surrounded by fake tropical plants and a life-size stuffed lion.
Buechel declined to comment on his project, but the club, normally located in another part of town, said its participation “aims to give as many people as possible the opportunity to overcome their inhibitions.”
“In the framework of this exhibition at the Secession, each individual can test for himself or herself whether this opens up new dimensions for his or her own sexuality,” the club said in a statement.”
