OUT OF THIS WORLD POSTERS…

I am fairly interested in outer space, other planets, and such… Not a huge fan, but interested nonetheless.  However, if my textbooks or wall hangings in school were designed like this, perhaps my passion/interest would have developed more.  From The Moment

Now that water has been found on the moon, it seems even more fitting that 2009 has officially been designated the International Year of Astronomy (who knew?). But let’s be honest: space’s heyday was the summer of ’69, when Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong brought a rugged, clean-cut appeal to the final frontier. It was perhaps with this in mind that Simon Page, a self-taught graphic designer, created a series of posters for the Year of Astronomy that are modeled on textbook covers of the ’60s and ’70s. The result is a beautiful exercise in conceptual minimalism, with a clear geometric bent that betrays Page’s math-nerd origins. (He has a degree in applied mathematics and took up graphic design as a hobby two years ago.) It’s hard to choose which to like best, but I’m particularly fond of the deep blue poster, below, in which Page uses diagonal lines to create interstellar objects in relief — and calls to mind the gentle descent of a meteor shower.

Page originally created the posters as both an exercise and a marketing tool, but when the organizers of IYA09 found out about them, they asked his permission to use the posters to promote the initiative. Thanks to the attention they’ve received, Page is now producing prints of the posters to order. They’re available on his Web site, in two sizes, for about $40 and $60.
